Counselor

Kindergarten is a time when students develop attitudes concerning school, self, peers, social groups and family. Adjusting to a school environment, acquiring personal/social skills, along with understanding the relationship between classroom performance and success in school are all functions of Howell Graves Counseling and Guidance Program. Parental support is also an essential part of serving students in the school. The counselor provides a comprehensive program through research - based classroom guidance lessons, individual and small group sessions, responsive services and system support.

Please look for additional information about the classroom guidance lessons that will be coming home with your child throughout the school year and for the parenting tips listed in the school's monthly newsletter.

Feel free to contact me at : cmize@mscs.k12.al.us
or 389-2630, if I can be of assistance.

Additional Counseling Activities

Caught Being Good Game – Students are given red tickets when they are “caught being good” by any faculty or staff member.  The tickets are redeemed in my office for a prize to reward and reinforce the positive behavior.

Tips for Parents of Kindergartners

Speak enthusiastically about the kindergarten program before the first day of school.  Find out what your child thinks it will be like and be prepared to answer any questions about activities, lunch and play.

Visit the kindergarten classroom prior to the first day of school.  Walk around and let your child see the lunchroom, bathroom and play areas.

Let your child know that it is okay to feel anxious. Let her/him know that you (or an older brother or sister or friend) felt the same way and that he/she will adjust very quickly.

Be sure that your child is well rested and well fed.  Regular bedtimes and mealtimes are more important than ever.

Help your child choose healthy snacks such as fruit, carrot and celery sticks, plain popcorn, etc.

Help your child develop a sense of responsibility.  Give your child tasks they can master.  Help him/her learn one step at a time.

Take kindergarten seriously so that your child learns that school is valuable.  Ask your child about what activities he/she participated in each day at school.  Read notes from the school and attend school events so that your child learns that school is important.
